Jesus Is Better (Pt. 3)

And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says, ‘Let all God’s angels worship him.’”– Hebrews 1:6

Jesus Is a Better God to Worship

In our ongoing exploration of why Jesus is better, we now turn to the profound truth that Jesus is a better God to worship. While the angels themselves are worshiping beings, created for the very purpose of praise, Jesus, God’s Son, is not a worshiping being; He is the object of worship. He is not only deserving of worship but is to be the focal point of our worhip.

Scripture consistently reveals that God is jealous for the praise of His name. It’s vital to understand why God commands the angels to worship Jesus. Hebrews 1:3 tells us that Jesus is the exact representation of God’s nature, making Him inherently worthy of worship. The Jealous God wants all of creation to worship Jesus because Jesus Himself is God.

The Root Of All Sin

So, why do we need a better God to worship? Because misplaced worship is not a trivial matter; it lies at the root of all sin. The Apostle Paul, in Romans 1:25, provides a stark account of what transpired when sin entered the world: “For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.”

Many of us might be familiar with the concept of love languages, and for me, words of affirmation are right at the top of my list. It’s a bit of a confession, but I truly appreciate those words of kindness and encouragement. Imagine if my wife, Alli, never said anything positive about me or to others. I’d probably start to feel a bit empty, and my ‘love tank’ might run low. But here’s the twist – what if Alli kept talking about other men in glowing terms? She’d say things like, ‘Wow, his arms are so impressive,’ or ‘He’s incredibly smart,’ or ‘His work is so important.’ Honestly, I wouldn’t just feel neglected; I’d feel genuinely offended!

Now, let’s be clear, I’m not suggesting that God is an insecure husband who craves our affirmation like I do. But here’s the point: it becomes offensive when we replace the worship that rightly belongs to His Son with admiration for lesser things, even when they are good but still inferior. So it is not only foolish to worship other things, it is offensive.

The Gospel’s Call To Worship

The Gospel underscores the significance of this issue. Consider how profound Hebrews 1:6 is. The reason the angels are being called to worship is because God is bringing His Son into the world. But why did He come? It wasn’t for the angels; it was for us! They are singing about our salvation!

In Luke 2, we find the announcement: “I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” The angels respond with “Glory to God in the highest!” Shouldn’t we, who have received this salvation, be singing all the louder? If we genuinely believe that God has sent His firstborn into the world to save us, our lives should resonate with a continuous chorus of “Glory to God in the highest!”

Exalting The Ultimate

Every day, we encounter various temptations that vie for our worship. The world suggests, “Exalt this and find joy!” “Praise this and be satisfied!” “Worship this and find life!” However, God’s voice resounds: “Jesus is better! Worship Him, and the longings of your heart will be met!”

The question that each of us needs to ask is this: “Is the most glorious thing I’ve found in this world submitted to Jesus in my worship?” All day long, we encounter good things before us, and the world entices us to elevate them. Yet, the truth remains: Jesus is better. Worship Him, and you will find the ultimate fulfillment of your heart’s deepest longings.
