“He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision.” Psalm 2:4
Devotion:
In verses 1-3, we witness a world in uproar, a collective effort to cast off God’s authority and establish their own dominion. This inclination echoes our sinful nature, as we often seek to build our own kingdoms rather than submitting to God’s rule. The climax of this rebellion against God unfolded dramatically with the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, God’s Son. However, what the world failed to comprehend was that God would employ this tragedy to bring about salvation.
Verse 4 illuminates two important things about God. First, it serves as a reminder that God occupies the heavenly throne—untouchable and unaffected by our rebellious endeavors. Despite earthly defiance, God remains “the Lord,” His reign unassailable. Second, the verse underscores God’s incomprehensible greatness. When He observes our futile attempts to dethrone Him, it evokes divine laughter. Like a parent effortlessly fending off a child’s playful challenge, the notion that we could overpower God is laughable. Ultimately, we will find it humorous that we ever believed we could establish our kingdoms over God’s. In the end, we will stand in awe of how God transformed the nations’ rage into a source of blessing through the death and resurrection of Jesus.
Prayer:
Lord God, we take immense joy in the truth that You sit enthroned above the universe. The assurance that You are unmovable and Your kingdom unshakable brings us comfort.
As we reflect on our lives, we share in Your laughter over our rebellious moments. How shortsighted we were! We thank You for the gift of repentance, for turning us back to Yourself, and teaching us to embrace Your loving rule.
Infuse us with the hope that You reign supreme amid the chaos that surrounds us. Guide us into a profound appreciation for Your perfect wisdom revealed through the gospel. We stand amazed at how You brought the best out of the worst—how You turned death into life through Jesus. In His name, we worship and pray.
Amen.
