“For in death there is no remembrance of you; in Sheol who will give you praise?” Psalm 6:5
Devotion:
There is every reason for us to desire God’s salvation and rescue, especially for the way it brings blessing into our lives. We tend to call out to God most deeply when we feel our need for Him. It’s often the fear of what will happen without Him that awakens us to cry out for help.
That’s what makes David’s cry for deliverance so remarkable. He isn’t only calling out to God because of what it would mean for his own life, but also because of how it would glorify God. David reflects on the fact that if he dies, he can’t help others remember God’s greatness. He suggests that if he is killed, he won’t be able to lead others in the worship of God or offer sacrifices of praise. This reveals a deeper reality beneath David’s desire for salvation—he wants God to be glorified.
We can never twist God’s arm into doing what we want. We can’t force Him to do our bidding. But if our deepest desire is to glorify God, we can expect that our desires will often align with His. Just as God raised Jesus from the dead, He will raise us up both to bless us and to magnify His power and honor.
Prayer:
Lord, we want You to be honored in our lives. It magnifies Your greatness when You deliver Your people. Our hearts swell with praise when You do what only You can do.
So, Lord, we ask that You show the world Your faithfulness by keeping Your promises to us. We ask that You reveal Your kindness by caring for our needs. We ask that You demonstrate Your wisdom by establishing Your plan in our lives.
We know that You have fundamentally made us to be worshipers, so we pray that You would draw us into deeper worship of You. Help us to see that our very existence is wrapped up in praising You. You are glorified, and we are satisfied when we find our joy in You. In Jesus’ name, we worship and pray. Amen.
