“Depart from me, all you workers of evil, for the LORD has heard the sound of my weeping. The LORD has heard my plea; the LORD accepts my prayer.” Psalm 6:8-9
Devotion:
Psalm 6 presents a profound tension that many of us face: the intersection between our own sin and the sins committed against us. In some ways, we are all both guilty and victims. None of us can stand blameless before God, yet every one of us will experience things we did not deserve. This is the challenge of living in a fallen world.
David’s confidence in life does not come from within himself, and that’s the key to reacting correctly to the brokenness around us. If we try to deal with our sin or respond to those who sin against us by relying solely on ourselves, we won’t find the healing we need. But when we recognize that God is both the one who cleanses our consciences and delivers us from our enemies, we begin to see what faith can do.
God hears us because of His mercy, not because of anything we have done. And when we experience His mercy, our confidence grows. As we become more assured that God is for us, we can stand firm in the face of adversity, telling our enemies to flee. Only faith in God through Jesus Christ addresses both our own sin and the ways we are sinned against.
Prayer:
Thank You for hearing us, O God! We do not take it for granted. Life without communication with You is hell on earth. We are so grateful for Your ear-opening mercy.
We find ourselves in the tension of this fallen world, and it is too great for us. Fill us with the confidence that You are for us. Draw our eyes to Jesus, by faith. When we see Him, we know that we are more than conquerors.
Never let us look within, but always keep us looking out and up to You. In Jesus’ name, we worship and pray. Amen.
