“A Shiggaion of David, which he sang to the LORD concerning the words of Cush, a Benjaminite. O LORD my God, in you do I take refuge; save me from all my pursuers and deliver me, lest like a lion they tear my soul apart, rending it in pieces, with none to deliver.” Psalm 7:1-2
Devotion:
This Psalm teaches us about the significance of words. While we might sometimes act like words are no big deal, both our own experience and the Bible tell us otherwise. The things people say to us—and about us—have a real impact. We may learn to minimize that impact, but words still matter deeply.
One of the most harmful ways words affect us is through accusation. When someone falsely accuses us of saying or doing something, we become vulnerable. It can change how others perceive us, and sometimes, it can even have deeper, more lasting consequences.
So, how should we respond? There are many ways we could handle it, but the best response is to turn to God as our refuge. He is our safe place because He truly knows the truth. He is our safe place because He responds with righteousness and justice on our behalf. Words may tear at our souls, but God saves the soul for eternity.
Prayer:
Spirit of God, help us bear Your fruit. The words spoken about us and around us are overwhelming, and we are so tempted to respond in the flesh. Guard our hearts and minds, and remind us that only You can save us. We find our refuge in You alone. In Your mercy, protect us and deliver us. In Jesus’ name, we worship and pray. Amen.
