“O LORD my God, if I have done this, if there is wrong in my hands, if I have repaid my friend with evil or plundered my enemy without cause, let the enemy pursue my soul and overtake it, and let him trample my life to the ground and lay my glory in the dust. Selah” Psalm 7:3-5
Devotion:
Psalm 7 continues to show us how safe it is to live in a world where God is the judge. Many struggle with the idea that God judges sin, but the alternative is much worse. It is deeply comforting to know that when we have been falsely accused or when some injustice has been committed against us, God sees the truth.
David is honest enough with God to open himself fully. He asks God to allow him to be crushed if the accusation made against him is true. In this way, David is willing to place his life in God’s hands.
This is a picture of true trust in God—when we place our lives in His hands without regard to the outcome. When we know how good and faithful God is, we can cast ourselves upon Him fully and trust what comes. We must always entrust our lives to the righteous Judge, just as Jesus did (1 Peter 2:23).
Prayer:
Lord God, in this harsh world, we need a perfect Judge. We cannot see all things, and we certainly cannot make everything right. So we look to You.
Please keep us safe, Lord. Hold us close to You. Have compassion on Your people as we trust in You. And where we struggle to trust, lead us into deeper faith. In Jesus’ name, we worship and pray. Amen.
