“Salvation belongs to the LORD; your blessing be on your people! Selah” Psalm 3:8
Devotion:
Salvation is one of those words that can lose its value due to its churchy or religious connotations. When we hear ‘salvation,’ we may not immediately grasp its significance—God’s comprehensive plan to lift us out of helplessness into His undeniable hopefulness. We may not recognize it as God’s transfer of us from the kingdom of darkness and death into His kingdom of light and life. We may not perceive it as the power of God breaking through our weak inabilities to do for us what we cannot do for ourselves, all based on grace. But that is what salvation truly is.
As David considered the full onslaught of his enemies—outmatched, hated, and surrounded—and as he contemplated the calming courage of God Himself as our sustenance and shield, he couldn’t help but acknowledge that his deliverance was solely from God. But this realization extends beyond his immediate circumstances. As he reflects on history—past and future—David sees that salvation belongs to God alone. Humanity cannot save itself. We cannot fix this broken world, overcome our darkness, or deliver ourselves from the mess of our sin.
God saves. And particularly He saves in Jesus Christ. Every deliverance—every exodus, healing, rescue, and redemptive moment—shadowed the substance of salvation in Jesus Christ. God’s salvation of David from his enemies assures us of the greater deliverance through Jesus from our enemies: death, sin, Satan, and hell. This is the fullness of life—to be saved from all our enemies and to be save for life under the blessedness of God Himself.
Prayer:
Lord, it’s evident that salvation isn’t within our grasp. With each passing day and every advancement of humanity, our need for You becomes more apparent.
We praise You as the God who saves, heals, delivers, rescues, and redeems. You do for us what we could never do for ourselves.
Lead us into Your blessed life, Lord. While we’re grateful for all You’ve saved us from, nothing compares to what You’ve saved us for. Thank You for reconciling us to Yourself through Your Son Jesus Christ. In His name, we worship and pray.
Amen.
