Gospel Centered Discipleship by Jonathan Dodson

“If we aren’t careful, we’ll follow Jesus on our own. Failure to grasp the community focus of the gospel can cut us off from the grace God gives through the church. This reminds us that discipleship is a community project because the gospel redeems a people. Jesus created and redeemed us as people in relationship, not individuals in isolation. Instead of following alone, we can fight the good fight of faith with the church.”

Reflection:

It is vitally important to know that we must have a personal relationship with Jesus. We find life in knowing Jesus personally. But this personal relationship isn’t lived out in isolation.

Jesus wants us to walk with Him and grow with Him alongside others. We don’t baptize ourselves. We don’t lean on ourselves. And we don’t carry our own burdens. Christianity is constantly teaching us to trust Christ and to open up our lives to others.

We battle our sin and the temptations of this world best when we are fighting alongside other brothers and sisters in Christ. We need the church, and the church needs us. Our growth in the Lord is a community project, and our enjoyment of the Lord is a community celebration. Thank God for His church!
