“For to which of the angels did God ever say, ‘You are my Son, today I have begotten you’? Or again, ‘I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son’?” – Hebrews 1:5
Jesus Is A Better Priority To Have
In the pursuit of understanding why Jesus is better, we delve into the first facet – Jesus is a better priority to have. The Bible presents a profound perspective: God has never referred to any angel as “My Son.” Jesus, God’s Son, holds the highest priority in the Father’s heart.
An analogy helps illustrate this concept: Benjamin is my firstborn, and in my household, he currently receives preference over everything and everyone else. When I walk into a room, people immediately inquire about Benjamin’s well-being. It’s as though I become invisible, and all eyes fixate on him. And, it is important to add that, I am thrilled about that!
While the analogy may not perfectly align, it underscores God the Father’s prioritization of His Son. Jesus occupies the premier place in His heart. God desires that people gaze solely upon Jesus. In this specific Scripture, the point is crystal clear – nothing, no angel, and no person holds the primary position in the Father’s heart, except for His Son, Jesus.
Importance of Correct Priorities
The assertion that you and I need a better priority is not made lightly. Misplaced priorities are more significant than we often realize. The consequences of incorrectly prioritizing can be dire. In business, if tasks are prioritized incorrectly, deadlines may be missed. In personal finances, if expenses are misallocated, one might end up in financial trouble. In our personal lives, prioritizing work over family, for instance, can result in adverse outcomes for both family and work. Misplaced priorities can lead to the ruin of our lives and negatively affect others.
In light of these reflections, we must grasp this profound truth – whatever we deem important in our lives, Jesus is better. Each of us can fill in the blank with our own list of priorities and pose the rhetorical question: “Has God ever said about my family, ‘This should be your first priority!’? Has God ever said about my work, ‘This should be your first priority!’? Has God ever said about my home, ‘This should be your first priority!’?”
Our Cornerstone
One of the biblical images that capture the essence of putting Jesus first is the cornerstone. The cornerstone is the initial and most crucial element in construction, around which everything else must fit. Similarly, our days, weeks, and budgets need cornerstones – the foundational priorities that everything else hinges upon. In our days, Jesus should be the cornerstone around which we plan everything else. In our budgets, Jesus should be the cornerstone, with all other expenses organized around Him. In our whole lives, Jesus comes first, and then everything else follows after Him.
The crucial question we must all confront is this: “Is the most important thing in my life submitted to Jesus on my priority list?” God seeks to capture our attention, reminding us that “This is my Son! He is a better priority to have!” Until Jesus takes the primary place in our lives, even surpassing good things like angels, family, and work, we will be refusing the best that God has to offer.
