Life In Jesus (Pt. 3)

In the previous articles, we began to unravel the profound truth that life is found in Jesus, as Paul reveals in Colossians 1:15-20. We discussed how Jesus is the divine source of life and how our very existence is rooted in Him. Today, we will explore the second aspect of the life of Jesus that sustains us every moment.

2. We Live Through His Sustaining Life

And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” Colossians 1:17

Jesus Sustains All Things

Verse 17 of Colossians 1 highlights that Jesus is before all things, and in Him, all things hold together. If God removed His sustaining power, everything as we know it would cease to exist. Nothing continues without God, and even those who do not acknowledge Him still depend on Him unknowingly. Paul is making a profound point: Jesus is this God. Therefore, when we say that life is found in Jesus, it means that every moment of our existence is a gift from Him.

Do you see how deeply we depend on Jesus, often without realizing it? Each breath we take, the consistent shining of the sun, the force of gravity, and the earth spinning at about 1,000 miles per hour—all these are held together by Jesus.

He Doesn’t Need Us

Consider this: recently, my neighborhood began a road repaving project. They used a massive machine that scraped up old asphalt and launched it into a dump truck. The machine is nearly the size of my house. I saw a worker walking beside it, concentrating as if he were working hard, but he wasn’t doing anything; the machine did all the work. The joke of our lives is thinking we hold everything together when, in reality, we don’t. We could push with all our might, but we would add nothing to the process.

Similarly, we often worry about things beyond our control. The pressure we feel stems from not realizing that Jesus holds the universe together. How do we perceive Jesus? Do we see Him as someone who drains us? Does He need us to hold Him up? Absolutely not. Jesus is the one who sustains everything. Without Him, we would fall apart. He is an infinite ocean of life, continually pouring forth power to maintain our existence.

Whether We Acknowledge Him Or Not

There is profound relief when we admit that we are not the ones holding our lives together. It’s not just about whether we depend on Him, but whether we actively acknowledge our dependence on Him. Jesus, far from draining us, is the very source of life that sustains us. Recognizing this truth brings us peace and stability, knowing that the same Jesus who holds the universe together is holding us.

As we continue to explore the life found in Jesus, we see more clearly how deeply we depend on Him. Jesus is not only the divine source of life but also the sustainer of all things. Our existence is a moment-by-moment gift from Him. In acknowledging our dependence on Jesus, we find true life, peace, and stability.
