Life In Jesus (Pt. 5)

Throughout our journey into Colossians 1:15-20, we’ve discovered that Jesus is not only the source and sustainer of life but also the empowering force behind His church. Today, we explore another dimension of life in Jesus:

4. We Live Through His Resurrection Life

He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.” Colossians 1:18b

Jesus, the Firstborn from the Dead

The latter part of verse 18 proclaims Jesus as “the beginning, the firstborn from the dead.” Just as Jesus is the author of creation, His resurrection marks the dawn of a new creation. When Paul refers to Jesus as the firstborn from the dead, it’s akin to calling Him the first fruits of resurrection. In agricultural terms, the first fruits set the tone for the entire harvest.

To illustrate, when I bake cookies at home, tasting the first one gives me a preview of what to expect from the entire batch. Just as the quality of the first cookie assures me of the batch’s deliciousness, Jesus’ resurrection assures us of our own future resurrection. His victory over death isn’t merely a historical event but a promise for all who trust in Him.

Jesus, the Life-Giver

Contrary to misconceptions, Jesus isn’t the kind of Savior who kicks people when they’re down or mocks their weaknesses. Jesus showed up in our lives when we couldn’t do anything right—when we literally had no power to even choose the right thing even if we had wanted to—and He resurrected us to life with Him. The resurrection of Jesus marks the beginning of a new life for all who believe in Him.

The reality of resurrection life fills us with audacious confidence and courage, even in the face of the most dire circumstances. We need not be deceived by the pessimism around us; Jesus has descended into the depths of death and emerged triumphant. His resurrection isn’t merely a past event but an ongoing source of hope and assurance.

By embracing His resurrection life, we receive an indestructible hope and a life that transcends the limitations of this world. Let us continue to anchor our faith in Jesus, the firstborn from the dead, who has conquered death and secured eternal life for all who believe in Him.
