Life In Jesus (Pt. 6)

In our exploration of Colossians 1:15-20, we’ve encountered how Jesus is the source, sustainer, and empowering force of life. Today, we look into another crucial aspect of life in Jesus:

5. We Live Through His Mediating Life

For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell…” Colossians 1:19a

Jesus, the Mediator

Verse 19 tells us that “in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell.” This means that Jesus, fully God and fully man, assumed humanity to be the perfect Mediator between God and man.

Think about how technology evolves; sometimes, the device you have doesn’t seamlessly connect with what you need it to. It’s like having a cord and a device that won’t fit together. Then, you find an adapter that bridges the gap, enabling the two incompatible parts to connect. Jesus serves as this mediator, perfectly fitting with both God and humanity. As the eternal Son of God who became human, Jesus reconciles us to God.

Reflecting on this, John Gill explained, “There is a fulness of grace in him…there is a fulness of all light and life, of wisdom, and strength, of peace, joy, and comfort, and of all the promises of grace…and it is (God’s) good will and sovereign pleasure, that all grace should come through Christ…which greatly enhances and sets forth the glory of Christ as Mediator…” This is what we mean when we say that life is found in Jesus—that every grace that comes from God comes to us through Jesus Christ.

Jesus, the Giver

If you’ve ever thought of Jesus as someone who takes—time, money, talents, and life—consider this: Jesus, in whom all the fullness of God dwells, lacks nothing. His incarnation was not to take from us but to pour out grace upon grace. Nothing was added to His divinity in the incarnation, but everything was added to our humanity. He Himself said, “I did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give my life as a ransom for many.” Jesus is the channel through which God pours His fullness into our lives. Jesus is the ultimate giver.

So maybe you are thinking, why would Jesus do all this? Why would Jesus just give and give and give? Well, verse 18 tells us—“that in everything He might be preeminent.” Jesus deserves preeminence in all things because He gives endlessly. He crafted the first creation, upholds our lives, and brings forth a new creation. He lived, died, and rose again so that we may have eternal life. Therefore, in everything, Jesus is to have first place. Our lives find their meaning and purpose in Him alone. Jesus deserves our worship, our devotion, and our surrender because all that we are and all that we have come from Him.
