The Cycle of Deliverance, Pt. 2

“I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the Lord.”  Psalm 40:1-3

Phase #1 – Testimony: He Did It!

Psalm 40 begins at the point in the cycle when the waiting is over—God has come through. David declares, “He did it!” and now there’s a story to tell, a testimony to give. This is David’s story of deliverance: “YHWH God listened to me. He brought me up out of the pit of destruction. He set me on a firm foundation where I was unshakable. And He put the praise back in my mouth.”

David’s joy is contagious. He wants everyone to know: “Many will see and fear” (v. 3). This is the essence of a testimony—a story about something that God has done, meant to lead others to see and fear Him.

Share A Testimony

When God comes through for us, when He does something in our lives that only He could do, we should tell people! When God delivers us from a desperate situation, how can we keep silent? Testimonies are a powerful way to declare God’s goodness and faithfulness. Our experiences of deliverance can encourage others and draw them closer to Him.

Let’s be honest—we’re quick to testify about everything else in our lives. We rave about a new face wash product that’s “changing our life” or vent about how our favorite football team got cheated by the refs.

Do you know how many people I’ve told about the cauliflower crust at MOD Pizza? It’s glorious! And don’t even get me started on the new road they paved near my neighborhood—I’m saving four minutes of commute time every day. It’s not hard for these things to bubble up out of me because I care about them and they change my life in some way.

But here’s the thing—if we can get so excited about everyday conveniences, how much more should we testify about the incredible things God is doing in our lives?

Many of us know how to share our salvation testimony—how God brought us from death to life through Jesus—and we absolutely should share that. But let’s not forget to testify about the countless other things God does. These are moments that would never have happened without His hand, and they fill our lives with meaning and purpose.

Phase 1 >> Phase 2

This is one of the phases of the cycle of deliverance. When God comes through, we give testimony. And the more times we experience this phase, it leads to the next, which is confidence. The more times that we say, “He did it!” the more we will trust that He can do it again.
