Life In Jesus (Pt.7)

In our exploration of Colossians 1:15-20, we’ve encountered how Jesus is Divine life, resurrection life, and sustaining life. Today, we consider the final aspect of life in Jesus from Colossians 1.

6. We Live Through His Perfect Life

“…and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.” Colossians 1:20

Verse 20 explains why we need life in the first place. What has stolen life from us and made us dead is that we are enemies of God. We have sinned, and our sin has made us rebels against God. All that we have said about Christ in the previous articles stands outside of us unless there is a Savior who rescues us from our sin.

His Perfect Life

The perfect life of Jesus means that only the blood of Jesus could have been a true sacrifice for our sins. If Jesus had sinned—if there had even been one spot or blemish on His record—then His death would have been completely ineffective for our salvation. It is only perfect blood, the innocent blood of the Lamb of God, that could pay for our sins.

And the perfect life of Jesus means that He gives His perfection to us. Anyone who places their faith in Jesus receives His perfection. When we put our trust in Jesus, we aren’t enemies of God because in Jesus Christ, we are now friends since we are clothed in His perfection.

The Lord’s Supper

The Lord’s Supper vividly represents the essence of Colossians 1:15-20. As we partake of the bread and the cup with God’s people, we recognize that these elements symbolize the body and blood of Jesus Christ, through whom all things were created and in whom all things hold together (Colossians 1:16-17). They remind us of the mediator who brings us to God. They fill us with the sustaining life of Jesus who upholds our very breath. And they fix our eyes on resurrection hope when we eat with Jesus in the new heaven and new earth. Just as Jesus offered His perfect life on the cross to reconcile us to God, the Lord’s Supper brings us close to Christ who is our life, our righteousness, and our peace.

So when we hold the bread and the cup, we get the perfect picture of who Jesus is. Jesus is the giver of life. Jesus offered up His perfect life to bring us into a relationship with God. Jesus made peace through His cross. And just as food and drink sustain our life and keep us alive—Jesus is the true bread and the true drink where life is found.

Conclusion

As we reflect on the significance of the Lord’s Supper in light of Colossians 1:15-20, we understand that life is found in Jesus because God is found in Jesus. Life is found in Jesus because He holds all things together. Life is found in Jesus because He is the head of the body, the church. Life is found in Jesus because He has conquered death. Life is found in Jesus because He is the one mediator between God and man who offered up His perfect life so that we could have peace with God through Him. And life is found in Jesus because we will be alive to God with Him forever and ever. This is what it means that life is found in Jesus.
